Tariq spends the first half deflecting criticism of his alleged support of R. Kelly, but since he never bothers to repeat what he said about Mr. Kelly the audience is left to figure out whether the term "support" is warranted.

His interpretation of the most recent Star Wars is straight out of the church (mosque?) of negro paranoia. The Finn character reveals bravery and valor through the entire film, which makes it unlikely that Tariq has seen a film that he's so critical of.

And oh yeah if you disagree with him, you're an apologist for white supremacy.

Nigga shut the fuck up. I saw the movie before I heard Tariq's analysis and I walked out the theater saying to myself, "What the fuck was that bullshit?" I'm a Star Wars fan but I'm not a blind dumb nigga...like you. They shit on Finn in so many ways it's ridiculous...and then tease the audience with him holding a lightsaber...only to have his ass beat into a coma. The only good thing he did was shot down some enemies when he was piloting. He has a fucking lightsaber and loses to a GOTDAMN STORMTROOER...BITCH OPEN YOUR EYES TO THE REAL. And every white character and their mama gets shot at by these "elite" soldiers and don't ever get hit but seem to be so good they always kill the stormtroopers and Finn gets his ass handed to him in melee combat...while WIELDING A FUCKING LIGHTSABER. If that isn't a slap to the face I don't know what is. I agreed with my brother that he made us both laugh throughout the movie but that's just it....THEY WANT BLACK MEN TO BE SEEN AS JOKES...NOT MEN OF POWER. on point analysis of the movie, within the first 10 minutes I could see it for what it was. He was portrayed as a cowardly liar and for any act of his to have value it was in service of the white characters.
The movie was promoted as him being the hero as if the force was with him and in the opening scene where the troopers are being killed it looked like that may be the case;
maybe he didn't kill the resistance members because the force was with him and he could sense the suffering but nah he was just a scared punk from the jump.
And just looking at it logically why was he on the planet at all if he was just a sanitation worker; in what military structure do you take a garbage man into combat, makes me think when did they make the decision to shit on him and make him a garbage man.
Disappointing in how people will get suckered into paying for this crap; illuminating in how with each generation we can see how
"The Empire strikes Blacks",
and regarding the Entertainment cover wtf happend to Billy Dee,one of the few Black characters to fight, survive and share in the victory.

I think your lack of knowledge about Star Wars and things Star Wars has left you barking up a bad tree. F'inn is a brand new character who will be in future films. That said,he just like a bumbling and inexperienced Luke Skywalker is just BEGINNING his hero's journey. If u watch the OTHER films you will see that the hero's journey BEGINS like this...unexperienced, unsure,and even "dumb" at times. J J Abrams and producers have said in many ways that Finn will be back...and when he gets the force...he'll be kicking ass and taking names. With W.S in almost every facet of our lives,don't bring it into the nerds last refuge:Sci Fi films. I'm just wondering how you'll backpedal and RETRACT ur statements when Finns hero journey comes full circle and he is the badass he already IS in the comics.

I have to agree, yes Tariq is right about black always being a supportive actor in movies, but since this was his first Star Wars I disagree with him on so many levels. He need to watch the whole saga then make an opinion. Star Wars is known to have a goofy sense of humor and all main characters run scared when the big villain comes out at first.

You are wrong on so many levels I don't even know where to begin. Finn was/is nothing like Luke Skywalker. Even in his most basic stage of development everyone around him knew that there was potential for greatness within him. He had something special and in the first film had moments of heroism. There is no such power or moments of heroism in the Finn character. You can attempt to justify your favorite negro character all you want but you are the one who has it twisted. Finn is more C3P0 than Luke Skywalker, stop it.

Yah need to stop reaching a watch the whole damn saga including the prequels no on his ustream or show ever mention the prequels, where you see why Finn and Rey relationship probably can't happen, due to the darkside. Even when Rey keep telling Finn to stop holding her hands all that was meant for humor and goofiness, like how he drank that alien animal water. Plus you got to consider the fact that she thought he was a thief. Then when they get use to each other you see her in one scene hugging Finn.This happens in alot of movies where characters who don't trust each other at first, eventually start to connect later. the 1 and only thing finn had to do heroic in that movie was to decide to not kill for the empire. had he not turned on the empire to escape, poe would have been killed, rey would have never done her thing and in the end there would be no one to help leah/han to get to the planet to shut down the star destroyer. all of the things that happened were made possible by finn's decision to 'do the right thing'.
his purpose was to turn over a new leaf and save rey. he did both. despite being in a coma in the end, he did both things.

secondly, this is only the beginning of a trilogy; who fin is in this movie is not where he will end up in the third act. it's too soon to dismiss fin now, without knowing where he's going to go.

if star wars did not have a character of color in it , there would be an uproar.
star wars did have a man of color and he's basically called a coon.

Fuck star wars! I saw the original back in 1978 when i was 9 years old. It impressed me as a kid,but I'm almost 47. This debate about if this brother is buffoon or will get a better role the next time is really irrelevant. This is fucking science fiction. It may seem like dudes roll is something we should really care about,but crackers will cast us how they want to until those of us who have the financial means start our own shit like the late Oscar micheaux did during the 1919-1940's era. To all black nerds who want to defend this white supremacist vomit called a movie explain something to me. Why didn't Finn get at least a drop of intimacy from Rey? What does him being a "developing" character as you say have to do with him not even getting a peck on the cheek? He almost died trying to save that woman and she showed no romantic interest in him whatsoever. I have mixed thoughts on this... the movie seemed a bit scared to go there. But it may develop in the next episode.

The energy between them was portrayed as romantic, not just friendly, Hollywood seems to be pushing the interracial agenda (see Jessica Jones) so who knows.

I myself need more info from Mr. Lucas to form a concrete opinion. I bought a movie ticket and Red Tails on DVD, but haven't seen either (I really just like movies where the African American protagonist put his foot up Caucasians anuses or foreign films with no Americans whatsoever in them)

Wow!

I went to see the movie before listening to this episode... within the first 15 minutes I was silently cracking up, knowing Tariq was gonna go in!!!!

He really wasn't lying. It isn't enough to have representation in a film, you have to be displayed right. The black guy was portrayed as a comic relief, although a goofy guy with a good heart.

I disagree about appealing to black nerds part.

They could've had an albino midget as the lead, Star Wars will ALWAYS blow up the box office! They have enough of a following.

Also, there is a possibility he may still get the white girl in future episodes, they left it as a sort of open-ended thing.

While there was a bit gayish energy between Fin and the other guy, he couldn't be a girl, otherwise his scenes with Rae would be really lesbianish.

P.S. Yup, they'll never put a pretty black girl near hot white actresses. Kerry Washington is super attractive and none of the other white women on the show are REMOTELY attractive.

Luke, Anakin Skywalker each took about 3 damn movies before they could save the day. Han Solo was encased in carbon and out of commission similar to Fin in a movie too! So while I agree in Tariq's analysis, he needs to keep an open mind to others (who probably know the series better than him).

Tariq's critcism is painfully on point. Star Wars formerly featured a few of the more solid black characters in fantasy: Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) and Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson). Now, Finn is the poster boy for a lost type of hero. He's bumbling, stumbling, non-heroic most times, and filled with visible fear. No one is seen as weak as he is.

I'd like for him to show soe improvement in future films, but I'm not holding my breath.....

I can kinda see where Tariq was going...but I still have to call it a stretch. The reason why...as far as the poster that they keep posting up...That's an issue of Entertainment Weekly, its not a Star Wars franchise made publication...so if you want to say that Entertainment Weekly is portraying blacks as buffons by putting him in that picture then I could agree with you...but as far as that holding true for the Star Wars franchise...can't cosign that one.

Secondly, as to the comments about Finn "sweating all through the movie", well one...he was in the desert, its hot, so he sweats, hell everyone was sweating in the movie...there's nothing racist about that...he was sweating in a desert.

As far as him being a bumbling buffoon & scared...maybe we saw the wrong movie...but where was he bumbling around? He boarded the space ship, shot down the space ships chasing him, he was busting caps in storm troopers asses, and even picked up a lightsaber and went up against the antagonist knowing he was more than likely going to get his ass kicked. If you wanna say he fucked up a here and there, ok sure. But hell the white girl "RAAAAY!", fucked up the ship when she was first trying to drive it. And in what action movie do the heros never ever run from the bad guys, or bitches up in the beginning - The Matrix, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, shit the list goes on. Black Movies too - Juice (Bishop was a bitch in the beginning til the end), Menace 2 Society, etc.

The whole intimacy thing...we really mad because the Finn couldn't smash the Ray in the movie? Really? That's what we are mad about. Had he smashed it would have been "So there weren't no black chicks in all the galaxy, he had to smash a white bitch?". And as far as any white action adventure movies where no white dude smashed or was intimate with a white charecter. But if it makes you feel any better there was no intimacy in the first Star Wars: Episode IV, or the first Star Wars of the first trilogy. So there is that.

And for those trying to down play the fact that its a trilogy - that's unfair - because the movie isn't complete. Saying you don't want to hear the fact that its a trilogy...Why? Because its the truth. I mean if judged every movie just by watching the first 3rd of it...then hell all the hero's and main charecters in all movies would be punk bitches.

And as far as why the black dude got his ass kicked by the bad guy in the beginning...well, the bad guy knows the force - Finn doesn't. The bad guy knew how to fight with a light saber...Finn didn't. I mean, that's not racist, that's just what it was. Why was white girl able to fair so much better...well, she has the force within her...the black guy didn't. I mean that's just apart of the story structure.

Now...with all that said...the way the dude came up with his name "Finn", yeah that was some bullshit. The fact that the dude was a "sanitation worker"...that was some bullshit. I even said "What The Fuck" in the middle of the movie aloud, when I saw it. But to overall, say that the movie is a symbol of white supremacy or an example of white supremacy in cinema...yeah...I believe that's a stretch.

The white girl was a scavenger on a dustbowl of a planet living in an AT-AT wreck, and by the end of the movie she was able to out mind fuck a dark jedi who had at least 2 teachers WITH NO TRAINING just on natural talent? WTF...Luke at least had his hand cut off his first try fighting with Vader after training with Yoda. Anakin was a prodigy and has his hand cut off after being a jedi with training against Doku. Her first time she defeats the jedi with hardly a scratch and she is now the pilot the Falcon all in the first episode.

It's a trilogy story BS....Luke destroyed the death star in his first movie and got a kiss on the lips (yeah freaky i know).

I hear you and respect what you say, but Tariq is on point with this one. Lets just take it for what it is without denial and excuses and move on.

Just saw the new Star Wars movie a couple days after hearing the podcast. I can see Tariq's point's about Finn's character, but I think that a lot of his criticisms are out of context.

For starters. Finn was never meant to be the star of the show Rey was. You can see it in the way they made the movie poster. Also Finn never had the Force. If he did Kylo Ren would have noticed it long before. He felt it in Rey when she was damn near a mile away from him.

Yes Finn starts off lowly, but then so do most Star Wars Heros. Luke was a farm boy, his daddy was a slave, Rey was a scrap collector and Han Solo was a 2 bit smuggler flying a hooptie.

No, Finn and Rey didn't have any real intimacy, but if you look at the first Star Wars (A New Hope, not that attack of the clones BS) none of the characters there do either.

He was scared and sweating? Well, how would you be if you had just discovered free will for the first time and used it to desert and oppose the most powerful army in the galaxy? Plus he's running through a damn desert. As the movie went on he gained more confidence and became more valiant.

That being said that Entertainment Weekly cover IS bullshit though. just like him being a sanitation worker. A garbage man wouldn't be sent on an away mission nor would he be trained to work the Ty fighter guns so well. That line was a sideways dig.

The most racist part of the movie though WHY the entire fuck is he the only black man in the entire galaxy!!! I can't believe that Tariq picked finn apart without noticing the most glaring problem with the whole film.

1. John Boyega is not making A list Hollywood money. He is making good money. Black actors are a dime a dozen in Hollywood. It is real competitive for black actors. Rappers take roles from trained black actors all the time. Actors in major series often take low pay rates, especially if they are unknown. Elijah Wood made good money for the LoTR trilogy but he did not make A-list money, even though he was clearly the lead and the hero. Daniel Radcliffe didn't start making A-list money for Harry Potter until well until the sequels.

Finn is not the lead, so how do people figure that he is making a lot of money relative to the other people? I bet Boyega is at the lower end of the pay scale compared to the other actors.
And personally for me, I would not take money to play a low grade black in anyone's movie. I would never play a Finn type character. You can't pay me to sellout.

Look how easily they switched out Terrence Howard for Donald Cheadle as War Machine in the Iron Man and Avengers series. They can take Boyega out just like that, no muss no fuss. White people won't complain if that happened.

2. I agree with the assessment that Finn is weak. There is literally a formula for how Hollywood creates these action series. I think the NY Times had the article on a company who's business is evaluating scripts for Hollywood to see that it has the elements to be a blockbuster.
If you notice, especially with the Marvel movies, they have the same pattern. Disney owns both Marvel and Disney. Regardless, all of the movies featuring white male leads have a part where the guy proves his heroism, with no debate. He has a supportive woman at his side. He gets humbled but he rises above it all.

3. That Finn and Poe moistness trend is real. I suspect they are going to make those two homosexual lovers in the sequels. Most articles I have read that mention Finn talk about his latent homosexuality, not his heroism. Finn is getting no play as far as the character analysis that Kylo and Rey get. I see more analysis of Chewbacca than Finn. Let's keep it real. Finn is disposable.

4. The number of films in the sci-fi where the black plays a certified hero can be counted on two hands. Sanaa Lathan was amazing in AVP. Snipes was great in Blade I and Blade II. Glover was really good in Predator 2. But usually, the black character gets killed, gets his tail kicked throughout the movie or plays the subservient role.

5. I can understand why Tariq told the dude to go see Star Wars. Go see it as in pay to see the movie. Tariq sells media. You can't be in the media business and encourage copy right infringement through bootlegs and things like that. So Tariq will probably always encourage people to pay for content, because he is in the content business. If he told people to bootleg that dopey Star Wars movie, then people would use that as an excuse to call him a hypocrite and bootleg Hidden Colors, etc.

The bottom line, blacks can't expect white people to write good roles for them. White movies are for white people's self-esteem. Black people need to make their own productions. I mean it is great that black people can now cosplay as 3 black Star Wars characters but white people really created that universe for themselves.

And on some real talk, I can make an assessment on a character based on the one actual movie that the character is in. To extrapolate past that one movie is wishful thinking, that slave mindset that the blacks got from that white man's christian religion.

Kylo Ren and Ray are well understood even at the first movie. But somehow, I got to wait for the 2nd and 3rd movie, plus read all of the Star Wars comics and Star Wars novelizations to get the full breadth and depth of Finn?! Who has time for all that? Somehow, the white hero gets established in one movie but I got to wait for 9 sequels for the black guy to get his footing? That makes no kind of sense.

No one is dissing John Boyega...I feel for the guy. Because he is an actor and was so excited to get the role and then he had to be shit on the way he did. I'm sure when he got the role he didn't expect for the character to get shat on...they didn't reveal all that to him at the time of getting the role. It just played out that way. And I understand him not wanting to give up a job...I'm sure he has bills to pay and at least his mouth to feed. Tariq's review regarding The Force Awakens was on point! As I was watching the movie. I kept thinking to myself if JJ Abrams told John Boyega to pretend he was Kevin Hart. I'm serious. Boyega in some scenes was acting like Kevin Hart and yeah it seemed like he was just there to service the other heroes.

Why couldn't there be two strong leads or at least two leads with flaws? It seemed like Finn's flaws came at the expense of Rey's heroism.
